ABSTRACT:

Nonlinearities are unavoidable in practical situations and a better understanding of their effect on the system dynamics can help us improve system performance. In this talk, I will demonstrate this using examples from infinite-dimensional systems.

I will first focus on time-delayed systems which appear naturally in a realistic modelling of any real situation. I will discuss its applications to modelling of machining processes like turning and drilling, control of desirable states of different mechanical systems and instability in thermo-hydro-dynamic systems. I will discuss the model for drill string dynamics, control of rotating motion of a base-excited pendulum and thermoacoustic instability in a Rijke tube in some detail.

Finally, I will talk about nonlinear vibrations of continuous systems like strings and shells. The interest in vibrations of strings comes from its application in explaining some unique features of stringed musical instruments used in Indian classical music. I will also discuss the correct equations which should be used for doing a systematic stability analysis of thin-walled circular cylindrical shells.

Short Bio: Dr. Pankaj Wahi is currently an associate professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, and has been associated with the group on Mechanics and  Applied Mathematics and the Mathematical Science Initiative at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He obtained his BE in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 followed by a PhD in Mechanical in 2006 from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His research interests are in the area of nonlinear dynamics and control, instability and vibration characteristics of continuous systems and time-delay systems.
